Infographic – Smartphone Users By the Numbers

Infographic - Smartphone Users By the NumbersThis infographic shows that while it took sixteen years for smartphone usage to reach 1 Billion users, it will only take three years for an additional 1 Billion users to begin using smartphones. The largest group of smartphone users are those people between 25-34 years old.

Despite entering the smartphone market after Nokia, RIM, Microsoft and Apple, we see now that Google’s Android owns a market leadership position. In fact Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems were the only two operating systems that increased their market share from April 2011 to July 2012 (at the expense of RIM, Microsoft, and Nokia). During this same time period handset manufacturers Apple and HTC enjoyed increased market share while Samsung, LG, and Motorola saw their market shares decline.

It is interesting to note that there are estimated to be 700,000 Android applications available now, versus 600,000 iOS applications and 100,000 Windows applications. Finally, as smartphone adoption increases, Americans are spending more per year on phone services, leaving less of their budget available to spend on other products and services. Americans spent $1,226 on average on phone services in 2012, and more than $100 Billion was spent in 2012 on mobile media globally.
