Your Entire Digital Identity on a Single Card
Keepod aims to offer a single card on which users’ entire digital soul can be stored.
We’ve seen numerous approaches over the years to try and store various types of consumer data, but it wasn’t until recently that we came across the Keepod. Similar to Skanz, which captures the user’s entire online presence in a single QR code, Keepod aims to offer a single card on which users’ entire “digital soul” can be stored.
Named after the Hebrew word for Hedgehog, UK-based Keepod is a credit card-sized device that allows users to securely carry their work desktop, services and digital identity with them wherever they go on a secure portable drive. Featuring a proprietary operating system along with hardware encryption and near field communication, the Keepod is verified as Citrix Ready and keeps the user’s data and digital identity secure. Consumers can scan their Keepod to access public transportation or make purchases, for instance, and to operate as an access key for secured workplaces. Meanwhile, the device can also connect to cloud services, virtual desktop infrastructures and application streaming solutions so that users can securely access business applications from any location, enabling enterprises to secure and manage data centrally. Let me be the first to cast a stone at this one. While it is an interesting invention, I’m not sure that this small startup is going to have the market power necessary to convince all of their competitors (the bus pass makers, the building security card makers, etc.) to cede their market leadership to them and run away from the market. Second, this invention is more of a feature than an innovation and while they are working on doing this, the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy 4 or next generation Blackberry or Nokias (or all of the above) will embed NFC chips in their phones and these NFC chips (because people are already carrying them) will be the device that will finally make the unification theory finally come to be. But even this transition to use the mobile instead still faces significant inertia.
The desire to aggregate and store the components of our digital identities is inspiring the creation of more and more startup companies that provide a range of products and services allowing us to access and benefit from our data more easily. Many seek to help us learn from our personal data, too. Whether Keepod endures as a standalone product or evolves into an app offering, the idea of a portable digital identity is on its way to the spotlight.
