Innovation or Not – Swirling Faucet Design

Innovation or Not - Swirling Faucet Design

I came across this faucet design on c|net and I thought to myself, now there is a smart design that brings a bit of the wonder of a dancing water show into the bathroom. It’s called the Swirl and was designed my Simin Qiu. He won the 2014 iF Haier special prize student award for the design.

The faucet has a single touch, single temperature design, perfect for public restrooms looking to add a touch of elegance to their environment, and you have to admit that it’s both intriguing and beautiful.

And with different patterns of rotating nozzles you can even have different water swirl patterns as show below:

Water Swirl Designs

According to designer Simin Qiu’s page on Behance the benefits of this new water facet (or tap for for my UK friends) are:

  1. Enjoyable
  2. Energy Saving
  3. Water Saving
  4. Convenient
  5. Comfortable

I do have to take issue with the water saving benefit point though. I think that because the water flow is unique and beautiful that people will probably touch the sensor to turn the water on in order to watch it do its work. This is likely to result in more water being used not less.

So, what do you think, is this new design an innovation?

Does it make you want to run out and replace your existing taps (ahem, I mean faucets)?
